Kyotology: A Hotel Design Embracing Shadows and Tradition

Unwind and Explore in the Heart of Kyoto

Inspired by the concept of shadows in Japanese architecture, Naoto Doi and Koji Yamanaka have created Kyotology, a hotel that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. With a focus on preserving Kyoto's cultural heritage and revitalizing the local economy, this unique design offers guests an immersive experience in the heart of Japan's ancient capital.

As the number of hotel rooms in Kyoto has skyrocketed in recent years, Kyotology stands out by offering more than just accommodation. The designers recognized the need for a place where tourists can truly experience the city's rich cultural traditions. By intertwining the exterior and interior spaces and incorporating a garden in every room, Kyotology provides a brand-new way to immerse oneself in the essence of Kyoto.

The design of Kyotology is characterized by vertical lines created by standing seam roofs, which emphasize the ever-changing play of shadows throughout the day. The high edge roof end, a symbol of the Sukiyazukuri style commonly seen in traditional Japanese tea ceremony buildings, adds a touch of elegance and authenticity. Careful consideration was given to the placement of windows to ensure privacy for guests while maintaining a connection to the surrounding neighborhood.

Upon arrival, guests pass through the Noren at the gate, signaling their entry into a space that goes beyond mere commercial hospitality. The lobby and lounge area welcome them, leading to the front desk for check-in. From there, guests proceed down a corridor illuminated by dim traditional lantern-shaped room signs, setting the stage for a serene and immersive experience.

The Kyotology project began in January 2018 in Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan. Extensive research was conducted to understand the history of the site and the city of Kyoto. The area surrounding the site, once home to a Zen temple, had been left untouched by urban development, making it an ideal location to preserve the traditional atmosphere. The design team also sought partnerships with local shops and restaurants to provide guests with authentic dining experiences.

Overcoming the challenges posed by Kyoto's strict architectural regulations, the designers found innovative solutions to maintain the historical view of the city while incorporating their vision. Balancing the architectural structure, livable environment for the inner garden, and guest comfort required careful consideration and flexibility.

Kyotology has been recognized for its exceptional design, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism category in 2021. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the hotel's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, which meets professional and industrial standards while offering guests a fulfilling and memorable experience.

With Kyotology, Naoto Doi and Koji Yamanaka have created a hotel that not only provides a comfortable stay but also serves as a gateway to the rich cultural heritage of Kyoto. By embracing shadows and tradition, this design offers a unique and immersive experience for travelers seeking to unwind and explore the essence of Japan's ancient capital.
